Refresh decisions need more than age
An old publication date does not prove that a SaaS page is inaccurate, and a recent edit does not prove that it is useful. Refresh work should begin with intent, product truth, market relevance, performance, internal role, and business value.
Google's people-first content guidance warns against changing dates merely to appear fresh. Update a date when a material review or change justifies it.
Build a content inventory
Combine:
- Canonical URLs and page types
- Primary intent and audience
- Publication, modification, and review dates
- Search impressions, clicks, and landing queries
- Qualified actions and assisted conversions
- Backlinks and referring sources
- Internal links
- Product or policy dependencies
- Current owner
Group pages by content cluster and buyer question. Looking at URLs one at a time can hide duplication across the library.
Evaluate five evidence areas
Intent fit
Does the page answer a real, current question for the intended buyer? Has another page become the stronger owner?
Product truth
Do features, integrations, interface examples, pricing, security details, workflows, and limitations match the current product?
Search evidence
Which queries, impressions, clicks, and canonical selections does the page receive? Is visibility growing, declining, shifting, or absent?
Authority and architecture
Does the page have useful backlinks, citations, internal links, or a unique role in a topic cluster?
Business evidence
Does the page support signups, demos, assisted journeys, sales conversations, or customer education? Weak last-click conversions do not always mean weak influence.
Choose one action
| Action | Use when | | --- | --- | | Preserve | The page is accurate, useful, and has a clear role | | Update | Intent remains valid but evidence or product detail needs work | | Reframe | The useful material should support a different audience or decision | | Consolidate | Multiple pages compete for the same primary intent | | Redirect | A retired page has a genuinely equivalent maintained destination | | Retire | The page is obsolete and has no useful equivalent | | Noindex | The page serves users but should not compete in search |
Do not redirect every retired article to the homepage. The destination should satisfy the original purpose closely enough to help the visitor.
Write an evidence-backed brief
For an update, specify:
- Primary question and direct answer
- Existing strengths to preserve
- Product facts that need verification
- Missing evidence, examples, or limitations
- Sections to remove or consolidate
- Internal links to add or update
- Conversion path
- Metadata and schema changes
- Reviewer and acceptance criteria
The goal is not to make the page longer. It is to make it more accurate, complete, distinct, and useful.
Preserve URL equity carefully
Keep a stable URL when the intent and page identity remain the same. When consolidation is justified, choose the strongest final owner, merge useful material, update internal links, and use a one-hop redirect from the retired URL.
Google's canonical guidance explains canonical signals, but a canonical is not a substitute for coherent architecture and direct internal links.
Measure the page group after release
Record the release date and compare:
- Query and topic coverage
- Impressions and clicks
- Indexed and selected canonical states
- Qualified engagement
- Signups, demos, and assisted outcomes
- Internal-link paths
- Maintenance and correction issues
Use an appropriate comparison period and record seasonality, campaigns, product launches, tracking changes, and other confounding factors.
Limitations
Content updates do not guarantee improved rankings, traffic, pipeline, or revenue. Search systems, competitors, demand, product fit, and implementation also shape results.
A refresh framework improves the quality of editorial decisions. It should reduce duplication and inaccuracy without turning modified dates or word count into success metrics.
